Flamenco dancer Carmen Ledesma returned to Edmonton for workshops from November 22nd – 24th, 2019! A featured artist at the first Edmonton Flamenco Festival in 2017, she is a favourite of audiences and students alike.
With funding from the Alberta Dance Alliance – Community Workshop Series , we collaborated with Flamenco with Jane to bring this workshop about. Here on only her second visit to Canada, also stopping in Toronto – it was a thrill to present another opportunity to study with Carmen in Edmonton. Students came from Calgary, Regina, and Edmonton to attend.
About Carmen:
Carmen began her artistic career when she was only four years old, winning the prize of Galas Juveniles and being a disciple of Enrique El Cojo. In 1970 she made her professional debut in her hometown, and the following year she toured South America for six months. After this, she began her participation in Andalusian festivals and the flamenco’s most prominent tablaos, alternating them with different artistic tours through out Europe, America and Asia, often together with Curro Vélez, in the Fiesta Gitana group.
As an artist of wide repertoire, she is considered one of the most significant interpreters of today. She has collaborated with the indisputable talents of the flamenco world such as Camarón de la Isla, Pansequito del Puerto and El Lebrijano, among others.
